Trading Partner of the Department of Communications Faces 4 Years Imprisonment

Deddy Suwarsono, a trading partner of the Department of Communications, faces a sentence of four years imprisonment for corruption charges. He also faces a fine of Rp 75 million or a further six months in prison.

The prosecutor explained that this corruption case was related to the procurement of 20 patrol boats arranged by the director of the United Coastguard (Kesatuan Panjagaan Laut dan Pantai), Djoni Anwir Algamar and project leader Tansean parlindungan Malau, for the Department of Communications.

The public prosecution team comprising of Agus Salim, Nur Chusniah, Handarbeni Sayekti, and Rachmat Supriady, called for this sentence at the Corruption Court, Jakarta, Monday (07/11). This trial, presided by Judge Teguh Hariyanto will be adjourned until 24 November 2008.

According to prosecuting attorney Handarbeni, Deddy met with members of the fifth commission of the DPR, Bulyang Royan, Djoni Algamar, and Tansean Malau in a number of hotels in Jakarta such as the Crowne Hotel, the Borobudur Hotel, the Mercure Hotel and the Red Top Hotel.

During these visits, Rp 250 was given to Bulyan Royan by Deddy to “symbolize the agreement” of the procurement of Class III patrol boats.

Deddy also gave Rp 5 million to Djoni Algamar as a prerequisite to signing the contract as stipulated by Djoni. According to prosecuting attorney Handarbeni, Dedy also claimed to have given Rp 152.5 million to Tansean.

The prosecutors also believe that Deddy gave Bulyan Royan a a further Rp 1.430 billion for operational costs. This amount represents 7 percent of the total project's budget.

Bulyan Royan allegedly requested, and consequently received, Rp 1.680 billion from the defendant.

Prosecuting attorney Rachmat Supriady explained, that the defendant's company PT Bina Mina Darya Perkasa, obtained the contract through corrupt means engineered during several stages of the tendering process by the actions of Djoni Algamar as the budget coordinator and Tansean Parlindungan Malau as manager of the tender process. The defendant's attorney intends to raise objections to this proposed sentence.
