The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detained the former Governor of West Java, Danny Setiawan, in Jakarta, Monday (10/11). This detention was related to suspicions involving Rp 56 billion of corrupted funds in the procurement of fire engines from the 2004 budget. “We also detained his colleague Yusuf Setiawan,” said KPK spokesman Johan Budi at KPK's office, Jakarta, Monday.
Prior to his arrest, Danny was interrogated for nine hours. He only emerged from the interrogation room at 18:35WIB. “Previously I have only been interviewed as a witness, but today I was investigated as a suspect,” said Danny when journalists inquired about the length of the interrogation.
Danny is being detained at Bareskrim Police Detention Center whereas Yusuf Setiawan is being detained at the Central Jakarta Police Detention Center. Both suspects are being held under article 2, section 1 and article 3 of Law 31/1999 as amended by Law 20/2001 on Corruption. “They are being detained to facilitate the investigation process,” Johan explained.
Johan further explained that in the nation has suffered an estimated loss of Rp 56 billion in the case involving procurement of fire engines and other heavy machinery. From this amount, only Rp 12.5 billion has been handed over to KPK.
On 29 October 2008, Danny repaid Rp 225 million to the nation via KPK. “It's true that the suspect repaid Rp 225 million,” said Johan Budi when asked for confirmation by journalists in Jakarta, Thursday, 30 October 2008.
KPK have so far named four suspects in this case. They are former Governor of West Java, Donny Setiawan, former director of the West Java Provincial Government Management Bureau, Ijidin Budhyana, director of PT Setiajaya Mobilingo, Yusuf Setiawan, and former director of the West Java Provincial Government Supply Bureau, Wahyu Kurnia.
